What Sammy Has To Say
Having led West Indies to two back-to-back T20 titles in 2012 and 2016, Sammy is one of the three appointments of Independent Directors approved at the meeting. He will be serving this post for the next couple of years, along with Trinidadian Attorney Debra Coryat-Patton and Jamaican Surgeon and University Administrator, Dr. Akshai Mansingh. According to the Windies cricket team, Sammy feels honoured to be appointed as a CWI Director. He treats it as an excellent opportunity to give his best to the West Indies team without being on the field.
He further expressed his confidence at making a significant difference to the West Indies cricket team, thanks to his local, regional and international experiences. He is also thrilled and grateful for this chance, which he believes will allow him to contribute to the sport and region that he so dearly loves.
A Brief Background to Sammy’s Cricket Career
This 37-year-old cricketer has previously represented West Indies in 38 Tests, 126 ODIs, and 68 T20s. he currently serves as the head coach of Pakistan Super League side Peshawar Zalmi. What’s more, he is also a cricket consultant for the St. Lucia Zouks in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). Besides, he is also the Goodwill Ambassador for St. Lucia. Major Highlights of the CWI Event
In this event, CWI President Ricky Skerritt stated that he is delighted to welcome Daren Sammy as an independent, non-member Director. He added that Sammy’s role would be to ensure that all the right questions are being asked besides playing a crucial role in shaping new ideas and solutions. He believes that since Sammy has recent experience as a two-time World Cup-winning Captain, he can bring a modern-day cricketer’s perspective to the table. This can play a key role in enriching Board discussions and decision-making with his valuable insights. He went on to say that his appointment bears testimony to CWI’s endeavours to strengthen its governance. Besides, it will also help the body make the most of the expertise across all stakeholders’ groups.
